ANOTHER FRIEND of Juanita or Charles


Another image from THE STRANGEST PHOTO ALBUM I Ever Bought. I think that about says it all. Someone really went to town with their colors on this one, including the dress.

  3. I'm pretty sure all the examples you've shown, and most of those coloured photos I've seen, were done by the studio, not by the subjects. It was a trend/fashion, and even though they often produced what we think of as a very odd effect, many studios offered this service.

    These coloured photographic portraits were common in the carte de visite era of the 1860s and 1870s too, and even daguuerreotypes from the 1840s and ambrotypes from the 1850s were hand coloured by the studios. Photographers usually employed artists to do this work for them.

  4. Thanks for the information Brett. I actually do have two images where the colors actually look like someone with talent did the tinting. I'll be posting them in the next few days.
