CATEGORIES: Picnics

While so much of this country is in subzero temperatures, we have picnic weather. And actually, I'm sad to even say that. So far winter has mostly missed us and that's not a good thing. A few rain storms have made me feel a little bit better about my well, but I know that the drought has been here for years and will probably remain for many more.

But hey, it's nice outside each day. Picnic weather!

Picnics is actually a category in one of my books, Tattered and Lost: Cakes, Picnics, and Watermelon. The idea behind the category is the sharing of food on special and not so special occasions. This photo, recently purchased for 25 cents, is not in the book.

The OVER THE SHOULDER SHOT IN THE KITCHEN category

I'll admit I'm obsessed with collecting snapshots. I love them. I love that they make me laugh. And I love when I discover a "category" within which to group some shots.

I like to think of categories as an obsession of their own. I've read about people who only collect photos of dogs or maybe shots which show the photographers thumb intruding into the frame. It's because of this that I create categories. I like to think of some poor soul out there only looking for photos of "women in kitchens looking over their shoulders." Their collection will be small, but I'm guessing they'll show it with pride, though no family member will understand and when they pull out the album to show it to friends eyes will roll.

So in the future, when you see a photo like the ones below consider yourself lucky that you found a shot for this obscure category. Don't hold your breath on their being an academic tome released anytime soon.

This shot was originally published on July 30th. As you can see I'm building an impressive collection of this category. I might die before I get ten of them, but it won't be for not trying. I vow I will never subject visitors to a sit down viewing of them in an album.

I do have to say I think there might be a sub-category going on here, but only for people in the US who are, let's say...older. I'm thinking I might have stumbled upon a photo of a Charlie Weaver in drag impersonator in the first shot. Maybe it's just me remembering Charlie in the lower left corner of Hollywood Squares, which was a daily fix of absurdity whenever I was home sick from school.

This is my submission for Sepia Saturday. While others present logical posts about family history, I give you strangers cooking. Makes sense to me.

SURPRISE...it's a category

When you have one photo of a woman standing in a kitchen looking over her shoulder it's a snapshot. When you've got two...IT'S A CATEGORY!

This second shot was originally posted on July 30, 2013. Who knew it would be the beginning of a category?

Only the SHADOW KNOWS...it's a category

The category of looming shadows can be fun to collect, especially if the subject is a child. With children looking into the sun, thus the shadow being cast, they often look as if in harms way. They have not yet figured out how to casually look towards the sun and act natural as this lady has done.

BABY TAKES WING...it's a category

I tell you, it's a category. Images of babies about to take flight. Rarely captured on film. So far I've only found them with their little engines revving. Tops on my bucket list: Baby in full flight. A simple dream I know, but let's see how many years it takes to find one.

I am a little concerned with the landing gear. The eventual landing might prove to be very bumpy since one gear seems to be facing the wrong direction during takeoff. Let's hope there was a good ground crew standing by.

More of the LOST "ART" of the Double Exposure

I found a site last night that purported to explain how to create double exposures. It was utter nonsense. It had nothing to do with a real double exposure and was nothing more than explaining how to do layers using photo editing software. Though many of the images were striking, they weren't double exposures. This sits in the craw of old timers like me. Don't use old terminology to explain something you're doing today that has no similar reference point.

Generally a real double exposure was an accident, but not always. Some people did successfully find ways to make film not advance or go back so that they could create a double exposure. They were still at the mercy of the camera and had no idea what they would get until they processed the negative and print.
double exposure  noun      the repeated exposure of a photographic plate or film to light, often producing ghost images.
• the photograph that results from such exposure.
Obviously this is not the same as placing layer after layer of images into one document in Photoshop where you're in control every step of the way.

Before computers you could play in the darkroom with multiple negs and create all sorts of wonderful images. I did it myself and recall an especially odd print of Mick Jagger with a fern sticking out of his nose. Oh to still have that odd print. And no, it wasn't a real photo of Mick. It was a shot I'd taken of an album cover and some tropical ferns in the backyard. I'm sure it was funnier at the time, thanks to the overwhelming smell of developing chemicals, than it would ever be if I saw it today. Best to keep it as a vague memory.

I continue to search for double exposures, but the pickin's now are pretty slim. I believe most people tossed them with disgust when they got their prints.

One of the joys in this category are ghost people. Don't believe in ghosts? Really? What more proof do you need?

This is the happiest group of ghosts I've ever seen. A ghosts day out at the lake. I believe they might have been institutionalized ghosts.

Have some double exposures you'd like to share or links to images? Let me know and I'll include them in this post. It's a category!

The LOST "ART" of the Double Exposure

It's sad to think that the surprise and mystery of double exposures will now be a thing of the past. No more surprises when you take your photos to the drug store for prints; you'll have already seen what you're going to get long before you have prints in hand. And henceforth, images that look like double exposures will simply be someone with Photoshop, or one of it's lesser imitators, using layers. Happenstance won't happen anymore.

I guess this is progress, though I will miss seeing the creations made when errors are in control.

One of my favorites in my collection is of a group having a picnic. The double exposure is of the same folks standing on steps which overlays the picnic shot. You can see it in the slideshow to the left in the book Telling Stories.

POSE FOR GRANDMA

This is one of those shots that would quickly get thrown back in the bin when I'd be sorting. It's in the category "pose for grandma" which is generally pretty doggone borin'. However, there's not much you can do when the shot comes glued in an album. So since I'm having a busy day I'm going to subject you to this category. I'd have preferred it be "eating watermelon" or "cutting the cake" or "fart fairies" or even "pigs eating watermelon." Yeah, I'd really have liked it to be a pig eating watermelon shot.

We'll give this one a subcategory...ummmm...girls standing behind garden, no wall, no garden, no...girls standing in front of telephone pole. Yeah, that's it.

Three Kids with a FART FAIRY

I'm pleased to present another vernacular photograph in the fart fairy category. Don't know what a fart fairy is? Take a look here to get the whole picture.

Now, looking at these kids, I'm suspicious the one on the far left, who has been ostracized by the others, may be the one who invited the fart fairy to the gathering. Further evidence is the frown on the middle child. You be the judge.

I'll tell you, this is a very challenging category!

CATEGORIE STUPIDI!

Sometimes I ask myself, because often there is nobody else to talk to, exactly why did I choose the people eating watermelon category? One of the answers I get, and might I say the answer usually comes to me with an Italian accent, is that it chose me. I’m guessing I need not ask how I ended up with the “people cutting cakes” category unless I’m in the mood for that Italian accent buzzing in my brain.

Categories are mindless fun, some more mindless than others. I’ll admit, even if I was fluent in Italian I would not understand collecting images that show a thumb covering up, well…most of the image. But hey, if you like blurred closeups of fingers go for it. If I find any I’ll send them to you.

Okay, I’m getting something coming through in Italian which is, “Don’t promise what you can’t deliver.” It actually sounded more like, “Non promettere ciò che non in grado di fernier.” I apparently have some sort of translation unit installed in my brain because I would have never been able to translate this on my own.

Okay, more incoming…”Sai, hai più viti allentate del Titanic.”

I’m sorry, but due to low blood sugar I’m unable to translate that last line. I really need to remember to eat lunch.

Anyway, I think what the voice was trying to tell me is that I actually never find any photos of fingers over images in any of the places I buy stuff. So don’t contact me.

Now, in a roundabout way I want to introduce you to my latest cake cutting shot. Again, a category you would think is easy to find, but no. People sitting at tables with cakes? Lots of them. Birthday parties with cakes? Tons of them! Cutting the cake? Pretty rare.

Click on image to see it larger.

So what is it about the cutting that gets me? It’s the anticipation. Until the knife cuts into the cake the taste buds are neutral. Once the shiny metal starts to slide down through the luscious layers of moist cake and sweet creamy icing…well…you can see it in the eyes of those watching the knife, especially kids.

Don’t say you don’t get your money’s worth here. Well, you can say it, but give me the name of another blog where the writer is channeling a language they don’t even speak? Or the fact that sometimes at night they see a Viking standing at the foot of their bed that glows in the dark? You sometimes get top dollar weirdness here.

Proof HE WAS THERE photos

Surely you've got a lot of photos of someone standing by something, which at the time seemed very important or amusing. Once home you realize you've got nothing. Never a close up of anyone; just posed shots next to doors and plants. Virtually this entire collection of Charlie, and the wife he left behind, are posed shots.

So here's another long tall Texan shot. In this one he's in Phoenix, Arizona. It sort of feels a bit like I'm taking the garden elves on trips. Charlie seems to fit the bill.

And I do believe a new category could begin with this image: men standing next to cactus.

The CHARLIE CHRONICLES. It's a CATEGORY.

I have many more photos of Charlie sitting. Charlie sitting with his pipe. Charlie sitting with a coffee cup. Charlie sitting all over the place, but I thought I'd prove that Charlie also looked quite nice standing.

This shot was taken at the Grand Canyon in May 1986.

Warning: Charlie will appear again. Believe me I will sneak some more Charlie in once in a while. The holiday shot is not to be missed.

CHARLIE continues to sit

Is it me or does Charlie just seem to sit nicer than most of us?

I have so many photos of Charlie sitting that it could be a category all by itself, not even a subcategory.
