The Category That Gets LITTLE RESPECT

I've said it before and I'll say it again...snapshots of women looking over the shoulder in kitchens is a category. You'll never see a whole book of these shots. Heck, I don't even buy all the ones I've seen and I've seen some really good ones.

There's always one of two reactions: surprise or a slight tinge of annoyance. Okay, occasionally you'll see someone smiling, but having been one of those people to take photos of women in kitchens I can say that it's usually a look that screams, "STOP IT!"

LADIES of the kitchen

This is not the first time I've featured my category: over the shoulder in the kitchen shots. In fact one of them was a Sepia Saturday post in December of 2013. So it is quite fortuitous that I have a new shot to add to my collection right as Sepia Saturday has a woman doing some pie making as the theme.

I think these two could use some nice captions. Any suggestions?

I'm especially worried about the whip cream on this pie. If it looks this bad now what did it look like an hour later? I think the snoopy lady on the left shares my concern. I'm guessing the gentleman is worried about his stomach later that night, but won't get involved in the current possible dispute. He probably brought along a bottle of Pepto-Bismol since he's been to these events before. I'm guessing it's Thanksgiving since the calendar says "November 1956."

This is my contribution to Sepia Saturday this week. I've been gone, even when I was here. Long story.

CATEGORIES: Cutting the cake

Cutting cakes has been a category I've been fond of for years. The usual shot is of a young bride and groom cutting their wedding cake. I rarely buy those because they all start to look like the "pose for grandma" shots. But anniversary cakes, which is what I imagine this to be, hold my interest because of the age of the couples. And even if this is actually a wedding shot, the story is far more interesting than young love.

Cake cutting is actually a category in one of my books, Tattered and Lost: Cakes, Picnics, and Watermelon. The idea behind the category is the sharing of food on special and not so special occasions. This photo, recently purchased for 25 cents, is not in the book.

CATEGORIES: The over the shoulder shot in the kitchen

The next few days will be category shots, categories I have decided to collect no matter how bad the shots.

Today we have the woman in a kitchen looking over her shoulder at the photographer category which I purchased for 25 cents. Not an easy category to find, but the shots are out there. I tell you there's a gold mine waiting to be found!

Lest you think I am not serious about this being a category, take a look at this older post.

Uncle Harry LOVED TO HAVE HIS PICTURE TAKEN

How disappointed were these people when they got the shot back from the drugstore? Or maybe this was something Uncle Harry always did; it was his signature for all of his photos. Harry always hated not being in the shots until he figured out a way to do it. The women knew Harry was a bit odd and were willing to play along to make him happy and keep peace in the family. The teenage daughter wasn't willing to cut Uncle Harry any slack. She knew he was nuts and thought his loud ties were the worst. But he was her only uncle so she'd tolerate these once a year photo shoots. It was only when Harry brought out his photo albums that she finally said, "That's it! I'm going to the movies with the gang."

The OVER THE SHOULDER SHOT IN THE KITCHEN category

I'll admit I'm obsessed with collecting snapshots. I love them. I love that they make me laugh. And I love when I discover a "category" within which to group some shots.

I like to think of categories as an obsession of their own. I've read about people who only collect photos of dogs or maybe shots which show the photographers thumb intruding into the frame. It's because of this that I create categories. I like to think of some poor soul out there only looking for photos of "women in kitchens looking over their shoulders." Their collection will be small, but I'm guessing they'll show it with pride, though no family member will understand and when they pull out the album to show it to friends eyes will roll.

So in the future, when you see a photo like the ones below consider yourself lucky that you found a shot for this obscure category. Don't hold your breath on their being an academic tome released anytime soon.

This shot was originally published on July 30th. As you can see I'm building an impressive collection of this category. I might die before I get ten of them, but it won't be for not trying. I vow I will never subject visitors to a sit down viewing of them in an album.

I do have to say I think there might be a sub-category going on here, but only for people in the US who are, let's say...older. I'm thinking I might have stumbled upon a photo of a Charlie Weaver in drag impersonator in the first shot. Maybe it's just me remembering Charlie in the lower left corner of Hollywood Squares, which was a daily fix of absurdity whenever I was home sick from school.

This is my submission for Sepia Saturday. While others present logical posts about family history, I give you strangers cooking. Makes sense to me.

SURPRISE...it's a category

When you have one photo of a woman standing in a kitchen looking over her shoulder it's a snapshot. When you've got two...IT'S A CATEGORY!

This second shot was originally posted on July 30, 2013. Who knew it would be the beginning of a category?

CAUGHT skinnin' a live potato!

Well dang nabbit! I don't let folks take my picture so it's with great surprise that I find this shot of me showin' up! I guess they thought it would be funny to post a photo of the old woman peeling the skin off a live potato on Thanksgiving. Dang cell phone cameras!

PRETEEN to TEEN in the 1950s

The next three days I'll be featuring vintage snapshots of a girl in possibly the late 40s to mid-50s. She's what I was convinced being a teenager would be like. Well, yes, if I'd actually been a teenager in the '50s instead of the '60s.

Alone with an egg.

I love this kitchen. I really do love it. The stove reminds me of the one in my last apartment. And I'm guessing that fridge was not frost free. Just think, there are people who have never had to defrost a freezer. Boggles my mind.
