The lady also cut a 25th ANNIVERSARY CAKE IN 1968

Two shots of the same woman cutting cakes in the same year is not something I'd ever found before. So for that reason this woman holds a special place in my heart. Twice in one year someone gave her a cake and took a snapshot of her with each of them. How nice was that? Of course, there are those of you who noticed the nudie calendar in the previous post, and now we have a husband who doesn't even put his drink down while celebrating his 25th wedding anniversary. I'm sure I'm reading way too much into these shots, but I'm guessing that this woman grew used to a certain level of disrespect in her life, and that makes me sad.

I still LOVE THE CAKE CUTTING CATEGORY

Just because I publish a book about one of my collecting categories doesn't mean I don't still keep an eye open for more vintage snapshots to add. A category is never complete, it evolves. So I was happy to find two snapshots of one woman cutting cakes in 1968.

Her birthday.

CATEGORIE STUPIDI!

Sometimes I ask myself, because often there is nobody else to talk to, exactly why did I choose the people eating watermelon category? One of the answers I get, and might I say the answer usually comes to me with an Italian accent, is that it chose me. I’m guessing I need not ask how I ended up with the “people cutting cakes” category unless I’m in the mood for that Italian accent buzzing in my brain.

Categories are mindless fun, some more mindless than others. I’ll admit, even if I was fluent in Italian I would not understand collecting images that show a thumb covering up, well…most of the image. But hey, if you like blurred closeups of fingers go for it. If I find any I’ll send them to you.

Okay, I’m getting something coming through in Italian which is, “Don’t promise what you can’t deliver.” It actually sounded more like, “Non promettere ciò che non in grado di fernier.” I apparently have some sort of translation unit installed in my brain because I would have never been able to translate this on my own.

Okay, more incoming…”Sai, hai più viti allentate del Titanic.”

I’m sorry, but due to low blood sugar I’m unable to translate that last line. I really need to remember to eat lunch.

Anyway, I think what the voice was trying to tell me is that I actually never find any photos of fingers over images in any of the places I buy stuff. So don’t contact me.

Now, in a roundabout way I want to introduce you to my latest cake cutting shot. Again, a category you would think is easy to find, but no. People sitting at tables with cakes? Lots of them. Birthday parties with cakes? Tons of them! Cutting the cake? Pretty rare.

So what is it about the cutting that gets me? It’s the anticipation. Until the knife cuts into the cake the taste buds are neutral. Once the shiny metal starts to slide down through the luscious layers of moist cake and sweet creamy icing…well…you can see it in the eyes of those watching the knife, especially kids.

Don’t say you don’t get your money’s worth here. Well, you can say it, but give me the name of another blog where the writer is channeling a language they don’t even speak? Or the fact that sometimes at night they see a Viking standing at the foot of their bed that glows in the dark? You sometimes get top dollar weirdness here.

CHRISTMAS: It's a CATEGORY!

A photo that makes me smile because it fits into categories: office party, Santa, Christmas, and best of all...cutting the cake. Oh sure, it could be broken down even more...woman smoking, soft drink machine...blah blah blah. Categories really aren't made to organize all of this, at least not for me. They're to add an edge of the absurd.

Could it possibly be more festive? Wild office party with overdone decorating. I guess it's a secret Santa.

CATEGORY and SUBCATEGORIES GALORE!

This weeks Sepia Saturday is a fellow sitting in a chair. It could be a category. Yes indeed, “Man In Chair” sounds like a perfectly reasonable category title.

Without category intent, I can say that I have acquired a large collection of one man sitting in chairs. Okay, there’s also a shot of him sitting on a bed so I guess that would be a subcategory. He also stands perfectly straight in front of things. Actually, I’m not convinced the standing shots are real. I believe it’s possible that his wife simply had a cut-out made that she took with her on vacations.

The shot I’m about to show you has so many categories that it boggles the mind. I’ll list just a few and let you guess the others:
Man In Chair
Cutting the Cake. Okay, officially this is not completely true. We don’t actually see any cutting or even a knife. I suppose I should call this an "anticipatory cake cutting" subcategory. I have others that would easily fit into this subcategory.

Man With Nice Legs, short, but nice. Open toe shoe no less.

Double Exposure

Woman in Adirondack Chair

I think you can see where this is going. There are categories and subcategories galore. And of course once categorized I’ll be keeping a watchful eye for more to add to the collection. Join in! Add your own!

And should anyone have any Fart Fairy images let me know. I'm thinking they deserve their own web page. And for those who only stop by here occasionally...yes, you missed a Fart Fairy.

Margaret CUTTING THE CAKE

For your viewing pleasure I give you Margaret and Jesse cutting the cake on their 33rd wedding anniversary on September 9, 1949. You can see from some quick math on the back that they were wed in 1916. That means that as of today it's been 94 years and 1 day since they wed. Let's hope it was a long and happy marriage, though I doubt they made it to their 94th.

I do so love cutting the cake photos. Celebrations, though the participants do not always appear to be in a celebratory mood. Margaret and Jesse were. Let's hear it for Margaret and Jesse, ordinary people living ordinary lives with special moments.

From the CUT THE CAKE COLLECTION

"Here little darlin', let me cut you a piece of birthday cake. Oh no, no, no...it's harmless...like me. Come now darlin' just a little piece before this ship gets-a-rockin' again."

WITH THE HELP OF LITTLE BROTHER we can cut the cake

Oh sure, this snapshot looks ordinary enough, buuuuuut...it's a little quirky. So I like it.

Just another cutting the cake found photo? I think not. Let's start on the far right, in the other room. The milk is sitting on a stool. Now perhaps the container is empty and was simply placed there before it ends up in the trash. Orrrrrrrr...perhaps these people like their milk at room temperature. Or perhaps they don't have a fridge. We'll never know.

Then we get to the chair on the right. Most likely the photographer realized that if it were left at the table it would have hidden the cake in the shot so he/she wisely pulled the chair to the side. Too bad they didn't pull it out of the frame completely. It sort of just, well, sits there...staring at us. Okay, staring at me. Probably nobody else is bothered by the chair.

But here's where it gets a little odd. The young man is helping the young woman cut the cake. Two hands on the knife. At first I had all sorts of ideas crashing around my brain. I came to the conclusion it's one of the following:
  1.  He's guiding her hand so that he gets the size of slice he wants
  2.  They're twins and it's a cake for both of them. There are about 13 or 14 candles on it.
What do you think?

Basically, I got to celebrate three birthdays this week. None of them allowed me to be there when any cakes were cut, even the one I baked. So I'll have to make do with this.

Happy Birthday to my mother, my father, and my best friend.

HURRY, HURRY, cut the cake

People who collect vernacular photos of people they don't know often collect, dare I use the word and risk my best friend grinding her teeth?...genres. There, I said it. Genres. An overused word. A word that often sounds as if it's given importance to something that just isn't important. So I'm going to use it and say one of the genres I collect are people cutting cakes. Basically, if I see a shot of someone cutting a cake I grab it. They almost always make me laugh.

Cutting the cake is a ceremony that we all seem to willingly put up with because we know we're going to score some cake at the end of all the nonsense. Weddings are notorious for raising cake cutting to a whole other realm. Cutting and sharing the cake takes on meanings well beyond the simple butter, eggs, and flour sitting on a table. The moment must be documented with photos. We are celebrating the couple, though most just want to know if it's white or chocolate cake and are already debating how long the marriage will last. Yeah, I'm a bit cynical.

No less popular is cutting the cake at birthday parties. Kids learn this at an early age. It's pretty much the whole reason for going to the party. The cake. It better be a good one or the word of the failure will run rampant through the school.

We have special knives for cutting the cake. Some people must put the cakes on special plates.

And then there's pot luck dinners where it's all self-serve. Sometimes the cake has already been cut by the time it's placed on the table amongst the other desserts. As each piece is taken away the remainder starts to look pathetic, sometimes caving in on itself so by the time you get a piece it no longer looks remotely like a piece. It looks like a mound. And because the cake was pre-cut there's no magic associated with it. We're sharing the cake, but not the moment. It becomes what it really is...just a cake.

The picture below is obviously a special cake, a special moment. You can barely see the actual knife being held by the man and woman. Though this looks like it was taken at an Italian restaurant the man looks like someone you'd find in a French New Wave film from the '60s. Meanwhile the boy looks right out of the suburbs in the '50s and he's anticipating getting his piece. The moment is secondary to him. It's all about the cake.

But here's what I really like about this shot. There's something missing in this picture. Something very obvious. Something that should be there. Can you find it?

And then there's this delightful shot where the two on the right are nearly giddy over the moment. Meanwhile, the woman cutting the cake takes this all very serious. For her it's an historical moment, or as my dad likes to say an "hysterical moment."
