MAYTAG to the Rescue

I will never again complain when my very old—I mean OLD—Maytag gets a bit off-kilter and looks like it might jump out of the laundry room. Nope, no complaints from me.

I have no idea where or when this was taken.

Small PHOTOBOOTH SHOT

Did the woman on the right have a sign outside the photobooth saying, "Will be in your picture for a dollar." Did she spend her days inside the booth allowing people who had no one to have a photo taken with someone? I'm guessing these were taken during the depression so really, who knows?

Small PHOTOBOOTH SHOT

I recently found ten smaller than usual photobooth shots. They're about 2/3 the size of what we would all be familiar with. This little guy is a charmer.

THE CAPTAIN without Tennille

Apparently the Captain, of the musical duo the Captain & Tennille, has been around a lot longer than we imagined. I give proof with this vintage snapshot from the late 1940s to mid-50s.

Or maybe it's Randy Newman.

The truth is I have no idea who this jaunty sailor is. He is just one of several thousand photos I acquired in the past few days. It was a bonus weekend.

Put the Doll IN THE CART

I find this to be an odd looking doll. I'm thinking it's because there isn't much depth to the sculpting. Sort of a creepy doll, but this little girl is clearly happy so what do I know?

Here's your task, if you choose to accept it. What is the doll sitting in? I know what I think it is, but I'm hoping someone else can confirm it. Someone wiser than me, which means most of the human race.

Little sailors, guns, and a BIG HAPPY SMILE

What more could a little boy ask for? A sailor suit, a stuffed animal, and a gun. Which is bringing this little lad the most pleasure? Let us hope the gun was a toy and that his smile wasn't from the glee of taking out the neighbor.

THE STRANGEST PHOTO ALBUM I Ever Bought

Last year at the flea market I bought the strangest photo album I've ever seen. It's not that the photos are particularly odd. People in the photos look perfectly normal. The album is missing probably 2/3 of the original photos and apparently a lot of foreign money that was on the left hand pages. What remains on many pages are the photo corners with captions handwritten in white ink below each empty spot that seem to tell a rather strange story. The real oddness is that the fellow who put the album together often put the same photo multiple times in the album, but each with a different caption. So you look at the first page and you see one of him with his "first wife" and then two pages later the same photo shows up with a different caption. The weirdest of all is the page where he has the exact same photo, one above the other, different captions below each.

I think the only way I'll be able to do any justice to any of it is to actually take photos of some of the pages. There's no way I can scan the pages without doing damage to the album. Some photos I can remove and scan, such as the one below.

When I first saw the album another buyer was looking at it. I moved in close, within his space, wanted him to feel a little uncomfortable. I wanted the album. It worked. He moved on and I grabbed it. It has over 20 photobooth shots, some handtinted. Let's start with this one. The caption below it reads:

Girl. cousin By. marriage
And that is one of the least strange captions. But we'll get to some of the others in time. For now enjoy "Girl.cousin By.marriage" and ponder what the heck was the owner of the photobooth thinking with that backdrop? Seriously, a Nazi plane crashed in the background? And of course it's made even stranger by the placement of the cigarette in the woman's hand next to the flames in the water. Okay, it was war time. I get it, sort of. But was it common to have backdrops showing death and mayhem? I'm not sure I've ever seen anything like this before.

MOTHER AND SON

A few weeks ago I posted a photo from the Big Bag of Negs that I called Brothers in Arms. Well, from the same bag of negs I have now found this, Son and Mother. The same young man with his mother.

These photos were bought at an estate sale. While others were busily scurrying around buying the acquired stuff of the deceased's life, I was buying the precious moments of their life. An old photo album, falling apart full of hundreds of photos and the Big Bag of Negs.

I have photos of this woman when she was very young with her sisters in Canada. Then photos of her living near Ukiah, California during the Depression. I have no idea whose home I was in at the sale. I stupidly never asked. That's always one of the dumbest things I do. I don't ask for names. It's always a mad dash to find the photos before someone else does. And I have to admit, I'm not comfortable asking personal questions about the deceased while I paw through their belongings. I just hope to give their memories a caring home.

This is my addition to today's Sepia Saturday.

BROTHERS in arms

Again I go digging through the Big Bag of Negs and found this gem. 1940s to early 50s is what I'm thinking. An interesting photo if for nothing else the wooden sidewalks.

At first I was so taken by the guys that I didn't notice the woman way off in the distance pushing a baby carriage. Adds a whole other perspective. I'm thinking they're brothers. The older one, standing, was home on leave and giving his younger brother "what for!" There's a cockiness to him. He's seen the world and is just back for a visit to the old neighborhood. Meanwhile the lady in the background prepares the next generation for life. Really wish I knew where this was. I'm so fascinated by the raised wooden sidewalk.

MR. ROBERTS

Here is Mr. Roberts at sea. This photo is directly above the photo of the parrot...which is next to the medal....that sits on the page...with Mr. Roberts. You'll need to figure out your own punchline.
