MAYTAG to the Rescue

I will never again complain when my very old—I mean OLD—Maytag gets a bit off-kilter and looks like it might jump out of the laundry room. Nope, no complaints from me.

Saturday is LAUNDRY DAY

Saturday is almost always laundry day. These days with the drought I try to do one FULL load. I really push the stuff in hoping to not do a second load. Everything gets washed together. I don't sort different colors, unless there's a red item in the bunch. Just throw it in, wash it, get it out on the line.

Here in California we're being told to expect an El NiƱo this winter. I'll believe it when I see it. It has been stated that the rains will probably hit Southern California leaving the north still dry. If that's the case, and weather stays similar to what it's been the past few years, I'll still be hanging laundry out in January when the new norm is 70+ degrees.

All of these photos have been posted before, just not grouped together. This is my Sepia Saturday submission this week. Laundry and the lovely sun and wind that dries it. Perhaps even encouraging a bit of a dance. So if I don't get around to visiting other blogs until Sunday or later blame it on my laundry. Lots of sheets and towels to do this weekend, and maybe a little dance.

LAUNDRY DAY in Bahrain

It's Sepia Saturday and I'm way off theme. I actually do have a snapshot of children with flowers that I could post, though they look a bit like characters from "Children of the Damned." Instead I'm going to continue with Donald G. Schnabel's trip to Bahrain. So if you're just catching this part of the Bahrain posts, you might want to click back to some previous entries to see more of Bahrain in 1957.

It's Saturday which means it's laundry day at my home. I'm happy to say I don't beat my clothes on rocks before hanging them to dry. However, because of the drought, it's not simply a matter of throwing everything in the washer and then hanging them out to dry; there is a step in-between. The water from the washer has to be removed from the tub to large buckets to use to water the plants around the house. So if there are two full washes that's eight large buckets of water that must be siphoned off and toted to the front and backyard. On a very hot day I'm usually worn out by the third bucket. Hopefully today will be a bit cooler. I joke that I'm living in Little House on the Prairie. But until the drought lessens I have to worry about my well, and every drop of water, where possible, needs to be reused. It gets tiresome, but at least I'm not beating my sheets on a rock.

These two photos are labeled "Native laundry Bahrain Feb 57." I actually have posted laundry photos in the past that can be found by clicking on "laundry" and "voyeur laundry" in the labels below. None of the previous posts were as exotic as these taken by Donald G. Schnabel, Betty Schnabel's father.

Still more photos of Donald's trip to the Middle East to come. And did I hear someone yell, "What about the camels?" Be patient my friend, be patient.

The DANCE OF THE LAUNDRY

It's Saturday, laundry day. Sometimes Sunday is laundry day if Saturday looks as if there won't be enough sun or breeze to dry things on the line.

I love hanging laundry on the line. People these days think that's odd. Whole communities prevent people from hanging out their laundry. Children have grown up never knowing the fun of running amongst sheets hanging on the line. They are used to hearing the dryer running and not the sounds of a spring morning as you do a repetitive task without thinking.

I believe those of us who love the flapping of a white sheet in the sun can easily see the movement as dance. So, in honor of the Sepia Saturday prompt this week, I give you Laundry Dancing.

The lady, the baby, and the WICKER CHAIR

I had a wicker chair very similar to this when I was a child. Mine had a tighter weave and was a rocking chair. This too may be a rocker.

The chair had been my dad's chair, then his brother's, then mine. Eventually it got passed along to my cousins who...let's just say the chair never looked as nice anymore and it no longer rocks.

I occasionally see similar chairs at antique stores and those old complex memories come back bathing me in a smile.

My mother always said that if she saw me sitting in the chair for too long it was time to get out the thermometer. I do remember sitting in my room rocking back and forth "reading" my books and listening to my Golden Records.

Speaking of Golden Records, there's a fun site worth visiting called Little Golden Records. This week Rockin' Jeff is featuring The Ballad of Davy Crockett. If you're of a certain age this will give you pause.

As to this real photo post card all I can say is I'm a bit confused.

I can tell by the last name "Rich" that this woman and child were related to Gertrude Bowen since her maiden name was Rich. Other than that I'm simply confused.
"This is Frances Rich with Frances Rich."
Why do people do this? Why make life anymore confusing than it is?

The FIGHTER, the Tetherball, the VOYEUR LAUNDRY, and the WASHING MACHINE

What? No dog? No barrel? Just a backyard fighting kid with an attitude. I'm guessing moments later he punched the helpless tetherball, freeing it from it's boring life attached to the pole, sending it across the fence into the voyeur laundry.

Just another image from the Three Buck Big Box of Photos.

Let's make her part of OUR GANG

This little dahlin' looks like she should be in an episode of the Our Gang series, including the dog with the spotted eye. In reality I have no information about her other than a few years ago my best friend sent me a fun summer box full of magazines and photos.

Let's see, what category shall we put this little gal? Girl with dog? Laundry on the line? Odd looking pump in background?

Seriously, does anyone know what the pump thingie might be?

LAUNDRY Voyeur

Was Margaret, or someone she knew, a laundry voyeur? Are there more out there like this? Is it a category? Will I find more?

THEY SHOOT PEOPLE who hang laundry, don't they?

This is a tiny found photo, very tiny, but within that less than 1.5" there's a lot going on. I was drawn to it because of the girl and her dog. Sometimes I get a bit tired of the old saying "a boy and his dog" and think people forget the relationship girls have with their dogs. I like this dog and the little girl posing with it, caught in the moment as she's saying something. Was she telling the dog to hold still or was she saying something to the photographer?

I also like the huge house across the street with laundry out in the large side yard. Again, many things just made more sense then. You could hang your laundry out without threats from a home owners association. You didn't care if your neighbors saw what you hung on the line because their laundry was also hung out. A warm spring day with a gentle breeze blowing, the sound of a carriage in the distance coming up the road.

To see a larger version of the photo simply click on it and you'll be taken to Flickr.
