GONE FISHIN': Goin' home

I have no idea if this was shot at the beginning or the end of the fishing excursion, but I like to think the fella is tallying up who caught what, the sizes, and information about the ones that got away.

  1. The man with his back to us looks like he is counting money. Sharing in expenses or was there a little betting going on?

    1. Oh I like the idea of these guys betting. Now, would it be on who caught the most, the biggest, or which one threw up first?

  2. Did Donald ever take a photo of a real fish? Maybe the trip was a bust.

The bamboo fishing tackle, the classic ship wheel, the wooden deck chairs, etc. of this series really conjures up the smell of salt spray and the sound of laughing gulls. Old wooden fishing boats like this are long gone today, as insurance and maintenance costs have made them a bigger hole in the ocean than modern boats. Donald may not have caught anything, but he left us a swell fish story. Thanks for another winner.

    1. No fish, no catching fish. The only shot is the one of the fellow gutting the fish. So I'm guessing either they were modest fellas or didn't catch enough to talk about.

Those old wooden boats were alive and fun. My aunt and uncle had a wooden boat with a small cabin. Once they allowed me to pilot in the San Francisco Bay under the Bay Bridge. A very long time ago in another lifetime.

  3. Odd photo - These dudes were mighty "clean" for a bunch that caught a lot of fish. But then, by Grandfather always looked spic and span no matter how many bloodied fish were pulled in.

    1. I call it the Mary Tyler Moore Syndrome. There are those people who can go through an entire day and come out the other end, no matter how tough and ugly it might have been, looking as crisp and clean as when they left in the morning. I, on the other hand, look wrinkled and a mess twenty seconds after I leave the house.
