Hair TORTURE

When I see little girls with the hairdo on the right I have certain visceral reactions.

First...the pain. The physical pain involved to get the hair to do this.

Secondly...I'm already convinced she herself was a pain. Maybe it's too many old movies, but when little girls had this hairdo, if they weren't Shirley Temple, they were bad. Bad to the core. They broke things. They connived against anyone they thought crossed them. By the end of the movie they'd had their comeuppance and were now on the straight and narrow, even if their hair wasn't.

Lady POMPADOUR

This hairstyle would later become popular in the 1950s with guys who wore white t-shirts with a pack of cigarettes in their upturned sleeve.

Another from the Bill and Dick's Excellent Adventure album.

HAIRDO or don't

Sometimes a hairdo is simply a hair don't, and sometimes it's a hair donut.

Now I'm sure these ladies were best friends, but why didn't one of them look at the other and say, "Your hair looks ridiculous!" to which the other might have responded, "That's just what I was thinking about you!"

Then again, maybe they had just come back from the local beauty salon where a man who had "chosen the beautification of womankind as a career" had done this to them. They had confidence in his judgement because "who is more appreciative of beautiful women than a man." Seriously. I kid you not. Watch the video.

HAIR TODAY...

and back tomorrow. It's always nice to see odd hairdos from long ago. Now it's possible when this young lady was doing her daily business this hair did not look as puffy. This was perhaps special for her sitting.

I have no idea who she is nor where she came from, but if I were guessing these days I'd say big hair Texas.

Excuse me ma'am, UMMMMM...

...there's something sticking out of your head.

When I bought this I thought this woman had spun her hair into a tight weird tinsy tiny bun on the back of her head. Oh my. Why didn't anybody tell her? Then I scanned it and blew it up and saw it was a comb. Fancy comb. I think I preferred it when I thought it was hair. Either way...not working for me. I keep thinking, "How many channels could she pick up with that thing?" Or was this an eating utensil she kept handy? Spoon at one end, fork at the other.

Well just bless her heart. I hope she had a good life. And did she will the comb to someone? Was it her signature piece?
