EDITH WILKINSON

This is Edith. I believe the last name is Wilkinson. That's how I interpret the handwriting on the back in pencil. She's a very pretty girl with shiny shoes. And an interesting chair. An armrest only on the one side. Clever. Just think how clumsy the photo would have looked if the other armrest were there. Instead it looks as if the missing armrest is actually part of the background painting. Yes, very clever.

Are young friends this formal anymore? I doubt it. Instead of a sweet little post card you'd be just as likely to receive a Tweet about what the person has just eaten or heaven forbid a sexting message. Yeah, things aren't like they used to be. Informal has taken on a new meaning. Little real thought is given to the person you are sending a message to. Plus it's being sent to perhaps dozens or hundreds at the same time.

This card must have been a nice little gift for Dina to receive. She kept it in good shape and eventually it ended up at that ramshackle house in Calistoga. Let's hope both Edith and Dina had good lives.

  1. No one is that formal anymore..not even old ladies!
I love her hat...and those shoes..1909..how old do you think she was ..eighteen or twenty?
I purchased a cabinet card the other day..with a one armed chair or settee, perhaps they were specially built for photographers, then again maybe he just hacked the other arm of the chair off:)

  2. You've got a point. Perhaps the chair came with both armrests but the photographer didn't like the way it looked. Late one night his wife heard a sawing sound coming from his studio. She was stunned to find him cutting off the arm of the chair that had belonged to her father. They didn't speak for a week.

I was wondering if perhaps she isn't even younger, around 14.

  3. I always assumed chairs like that were made to accommodate bustles.
A woman would have to sit sort of side saddle.

  4. Well there you go. Bustles. I hadn't even thought of those dang things! Excellent observation my friend.

  7. Thank you Alan. Welcome aboard.

Yes, Willow, I can imagine here walking down the street with that had and coat on feeling very confident. And occasionally smiling when some man tips their hat to her. Once home lots of silly girlish laughter.

  8. Grand find.

There is so much warm personality in her portrait. A relaxed, confident woman. So often the portait is stiff and posed. She looks as if she just walked up and sat down.

  9. She reminds me of someone you'd find in "Anne of Green Gables." I can easily imagine her being one of Anne's friends.

  10. Ah those darn bustles..oh I would have hated them..but it does make sense! I had to come back and see what your other readers thought about that chair! :)

  11. Yes, I hadn't even thought of those blasted bustles. And why were those ever invented? Was their a logicla reason or just more fashion nonsense? When fashion hampers movement I say "Pooh" on it.

  12. This young woman is absolutely lovely. That bustle business makes sense as an explanation for the one-armed chair...
