Visiting the YMCA in SCOTLAND DURING WORLD WAR I

As soon as I saw the image for Sepia Saturday this week I knew exactly which photo I needed to feature. The problem…where did I put it?

This real photo post card is from a collection of cards that belonged to my Scottish maternal grandmother. There is nothing written on the back so I have no idea who any of these folks are. I am guessing it was taken in Scotland. Perhaps some of these people were friends of my grandmother; none of them look familiar.

There are a lot of stories here that we'll never know, but oh my it is fun to speculate.

And thank you to all who have bought copies of my new book. I hope you enjoy it.

  1. What a coinky-dinky - my post includes reference to the YMCA too.

    1. Indeed. I haven't decided if all of them were having fun. The one fella not in uniform looks a bit shell shocked.

  3. This is a wonderful photo. Are those donuts on the plate near the checkerboard?

    1. I know. How can things possibly go wrong with donuts in the snapshot?

  4. Did you remember the photo for British soldiers or the doughnuts? For soldiers back from the front, canteens were and are a place of normality. Coffee, cake, and checkers without random violence.

    1. Most definitely the soldiers. The donuts are just a bonus.

  5. Great photo! I love that woman's high hair style, and the smiling guy to her left just needs a donut in his hand :-)

    1. I can't tell if that's a hat or her hair. I first got this card when I was a kid and that woman has always fascinated me.

  6. I'm surprised they actually left two donuts on the plate?!!

    1. I think the fella with his back to the donuts might be asking the lassie, "Whatch mean I can't have another wee donut?"

  7. A most interesting photo - I wonder where in Scotland this is - there couldn't have been to many YMCAs there back in the 1940s.

The YMCAs did a lot of work with POWs.

    1. My grandparents lived in Motherwell before emigrated to California, but grandma used to ride her bicycle to Edinburgh all the time. So I'd say we can take our pick.

    2. The "historic" YMCA in Motherwell was recently put up for sale.

There is nothing in the photos to link to your photo though. Just thought you might enjoy the news story.

    3. These were great fun to see! Reminded me of when my family still owned property in Motherwell and the funny stories involved with my dad and uncle working long distance with the Scottish agent.

  8. A great photo for homing in on the details. I think that lady is wearing a cloche-type hat and her hair is peeking out from under it!
