The FERRY FROM WHERE? Oakland!

This photo also comes from Donald Schnabel's family album. No notes, so I have no idea where this was taken. Any ideas?

UPDATE: Thanks to Intense Guy I can now say that this is the old Key Route Pier in Oakland, California. You can read about it here.

  1. It looks familiar but passenger port terminals like this are long gone. Maybe a west coast ferry terminal? But maybe on the Great Lakes or east coast. The photo has a style suited to an older camera, circa 1900 would be my guess.

    1. Since most of the photos in the album from Betty's father aren't fixed on pages this photo could be from anywhere. It's certainly interesting and grand.

  2. Donald traveled the world over, so this could be anywhere indeed!

However, he did live in the Bay Area, so one might look into the Oakland, Alameda or San Francisco ferry terminals - I'll look using Mike's dating - and see if there is any visual match. He also lived near the Long Island Sound and NYC... which has another half dozen "possibles".

    1. Most definitely not San Francisco. I thought of Oakland too, though it just doesn't seem right, but what I found looked nothing like this. It may remain a mystery.

  3. It is hard to tell from the angle but I think the terminal in:

might be a match. Note the 3 windows in the coupolo and general roof line - the round silo like thing also matches.

    1. Yup, that's it! I initially thought it might be Oakland because of the faint image of the hills in the background, but it seemed so far out in the bay which didn't make sense. Now it does. Thank you!

    2. Bravo! I guessed it might be Oakland too because it seemed more like a ferry terminal for a big bay. I like the idea that the street cars went right to the ferry. Could the cars actually roll onto the boats?

    3. I'll ask my dad about this. He remembers the one in Berkeley.

  5. The photo predates 1933 according to:
