I have to admit that I do wonder how Betty would react to photos of her being posted online. I'm guessing she wouldn't have liked it. I know very little about her, but I did hear one of her neighbors talking about her at the estate sale. I sometimes think I should drive back to the neighborhood and talk to the neighbors in order to try and put together a more complete story of who Betty Schnabel was.

DeleteIt is perhaps the most difficult issue posed by the magic of the internet. When is anonymity appropriate? How long does it last?
ReplyDeleteWith Donald Schnabel's photo series, I think we enjoy them for their artistic merit. Learning the identities of people in the photos is interesting, but we admire Betty and company not as celebrities but as real people portrayed in places that sadly are vanishing from 21st century life. It's that wonderful vernacular element combined with Donald's superb camera that makes this a terrific photo. Poetry in light.
I completely agree. I feel fortunate to have been able to buy all of these slides and, for now, to keep them together. Images that even family members didn't want have ended up in my care. I appreciate them and the thin story lines we find. I try to never make fun of the people in the images, though at times there's simply no way around it. Lots more to come from Donald and Betty.
DeleteI love seeing photos like this because they keep the people here in an eternal way.
ReplyDeleteI agree, but you never know how the people would want to be remembered. I like to think of them as being the real history makers.
