FRAMED in gold

For anyone familiar with my recent posts you know that a few weeks ago I purchased a gold mine of photos. I lucked out at an extremely wonderful estate sale when I scored several photo albums, thousands of slides, and a young girls scrapbook. I figured there had to be something within one of the albums to go with this weeks Sepia Saturday prompt. I went with golden frame instead of what was within the frame and a count of three that go together.

What follows are all very tiny tintypes. We are the first people to ever see these images large. All of these folks are grouped together on one page with no information given as to their relationship to each other.

This golden fellow measures 15/16” x 1.25” including the frame.

Sisters, cousins, or just friends who all had their photos taken on the same day by the same photographer? A day out together filled with flirting, giggling, and some fine pastries? We can send them wherever we imagine.

  1. That bonnet on the last photo is remarkable. I wonder if it was colourful.

  2. That first little boy is beautiful; he's dressed so well -- shirt, jacket, tie...an entire striped suit. Amazing find!

  5. It feels quite exciting to be the first ones to see them in this enlarged state. I always feel a little bit sad to think that these lives are long over.
Thanks for a great post of your wonderful find!

  7. Great find! The photo mounts are a bit tattered, but that just gives them more character.

  9. The similar paper frames on the three girls photos suggests a holiday day trip. I can see them arm in arm strolling down the boardwalk. The boy's tintype could almost be one taken in a photobooth. Check out the video on my post this weekend to see how these were done.

  10. Truly a gold mine of pics. How exciting. I too have a small selection of unidentified tintypes --- drives me crazy that I can't put names to all.

  11. A lovely selection of tintypes. I'm guessing from the sleeves of the dresses that the tintype portraits mounted in carte de visite-sized paper/card sleeves were made in the 1890s, and quite possibly the one mounted behind a brass/pinchbeck preserver was from the same period. Children's clothes are always more difficult to date. Thanks for sharing these, and I'm looking forward to seeing more from that intriguing collection.

  13. I don't want to sound "critical" and the ladies were probably sweet as can be - but that last one - I think she wore all that "stuff" to distract the eye from her.

    1. I'm thinking she was in a production of My Fair Lady. Can't you just hear those long cat-tail-getting-stepped-on-vowels?
