When you GO OUT IN THE WOODS TODAY...

be sure to take along two huge makeup bags. If you're going to pet a bear's butt you want to make sure you're attractive when the coroner shows up.

  1. Did you ever wonder what made it look like a good idea?

    1. Indeed. Just a big fuzzy wuzzy with huge claws. Ever seen a bear track? HUGE claws.

  2. I wonder when was the last time they washed their face!

As for bear butt petting, before circa 1960 the wildlife in national parks was considered something like citizens of a petting zoo. My naughty great grandfather hand fed caramels to the deer in Yosemite! The bears used to sit on the side of the road in Yellowstone, waiting for handouts. There are a slew of Kodachrome slides on the Internet that illustrate their dependence on being fed by tourists. In the 1960s it was decided the wildlife should actually be wild, and with a lot of tourist hand slapping over the decade the feeding habit was finally broken---and the new generation of animals became less amiable to people, let alone fondling.

    1. I remember the bear jams in Yellowstone back in the '60s. All traffic would come to a halt and people would pile out of their cars to take pictures. You had to wonder about the people who approached the cubs who were too stupid to think that momma was somewhere watching. Shoot, I won't even go near a baby turkey because I've seen what the momma turkey does when you even 20 feet away. I'm not messin' with a bear.

    2. I'm with Tattered. I've been attacked by a Rooster who I suppose was "guarding" his hens. Nasty bugger.

    3. Raise your hand if you've been attacked by large fowl!

      What? Only two of us?

  3. Excellent image. The man at left has obviously given up hope. With four daughters, I know the feeling.

    1. I can hear him repeating, "Are you going to be much longer? How soon will you be done? We need to get going."

Then five minutes later he comes back and repeats it.
