The PARENTS of George and Gladys

Alfred Kallman and Lorena Aina Beck. These are the parent's of George and Gladys. I do not know where Alfred was born, but I'm finding references to Montana. Lorena was born in Colorado.

From what small information I can find Lorena was born December 7, 1898. Her father was a Beck, her mother a Sjoberg. She died November 19, 1952 at age 53 in San Francisco.

As to Alfred, I'm not sure if what I've found is actually the Alfred we're looking at. What I've found says John Alfred Kallman was born August 27, 1892. His father's last name was Lassfalk which means for some reason Alfred had a last name change. His mother's name was Kaeko. He died September 26, 1954 at age 62 in San Mateo, California. I do have a photo of his parents, but the name is Kallman. Thus I'm assuming the father is a step-father and Alfred and any siblings were adopted.

Alfred owned a company that did house painting and wallpaper hanging. Lorena was a nurse. He also owned a small mine. There will be images from all of this in future posts.

For now, just introduce yourself to Alfred and Lorena.

I believe this is Lorena Aina Beck.

And in the bottom of one of the boxes of photos were these glasses that once belonged to Lorena, the mother of George and Gladys.

Another Sepia Saturday presentation.

And could I ask a favor? Take a look at another post I did this week. I'm trying to figure out if the people in this photo are recognizable to anyone.

  1. Too bad Lorena was not born in Montana, since the in-laws now own what is called 'the Beck place', homesteaded in the Teens South of Havre, Montana. I've never heard the name Kallman, but I'll check at the Historical Society. A lot of people came and went from the early 1860's to about 1920 that were involved in mining one way or another.

  2. I believe Alfred's mine was here in California because there are photos of the kids there. But then, who knows.

  3. Perhaps his father was involved in mining, hence his birth in this state. It's worth a shot. Do you have any idea how old Alfred was the year that the photos were taken?

  4. Dave, you got me thinking. I did remember finding some information online about Alfred and Lorena and I have added it to the post. A mystery begins to unfold because Alfred seems to have been adopted by a Kallman because his father's last name is different, if what I found online is the right Alfred. Take a look at the post.

Oh to be able to afford an ancestry.com account.

  5. Fantastic photos, and I do see the resemblance to George and Gladys in some of them. The glasses - now that's a special treasure.

  7. As always I find I am drawn in by the faces, searching in each one of them for something they are saying about themselves and their lives. This is the fascination of old photographs and a fascination that is wonderfully illustrated by all the images you feature on your blog. As for your Scottish photograph : upper crust they may be but I suspect not upper crust enough for them to be who you suspect them of being.

  8. Thanks Alan. I appreciate your appreciating.

No, I know it's not the Queen Mum, but after owning this photo for so many decades, returning to it over and over again wondering why I have two of them and why they're in with my grandmother's photos, I suddenly thought, "Well, I'm not related to these people. So who the heck are they?" It's such a fine real photo post card that I thought it might have been someone of importance. Plus they're just such wonderful looking cast.

  11. So many mysteries from the past that will never be solved. By the time most people begin to get curious about their ancestory, there is no one left to fill them in on those that have gone before us. I so adore the old pictures and do have a lot of some of my ancestors. Still wish I had asked a lot more questions of my mom and dad. Great pictures you have there. Carol
