BROTHERS in arms

Again I go digging through the Big Bag of Negs and found this gem. 1940s to early 50s is what I'm thinking. An interesting photo if for nothing else the wooden sidewalks.

At first I was so taken by the guys that I didn't notice the woman way off in the distance pushing a baby carriage. Adds a whole other perspective. I'm thinking they're brothers. The older one, standing, was home on leave and giving his younger brother "what for!" There's a cockiness to him. He's seen the world and is just back for a visit to the old neighborhood. Meanwhile the lady in the background prepares the next generation for life. Really wish I knew where this was. I'm so fascinated by the raised wooden sidewalk.

  1. Another great photograph. Thank you for your post on scanning. My Epson V700 scanner arrived today and I scanned some newly found glass plate negatives this morning. The results are on my blog. Your advice made all the difference!

  2. Hm. That walkway on stilts is a curiosity. Excellent find.

  3. It is a good photo, including the steeple of the church in the background. Please share if you developed this yourself,: I ask because you mention bag of negs, which I think are negatives. Does anyone develop negatives anywhere anymore?

  4. Great photo in so many ways. Those boys really are quite fetching. I also would love to know where this is.

  5. Laurie, glad to hear it's working. I do love my scanner.

Anyjazz, I'm fascinated by the wooden sidewalks. I'm assuming that large grassy area floods.

Pat, no, these negatives were bought at an estate sale. Several hundred shoved into a bag. I haven't developed film since I guess the 1970s. All my old equipment, including a very nice enlarger, are up in the attic. All the negs from the past several posts are from the Big Bag of Negs. Each has been a surprise. You need a special scanner to do slides which I wrote about on June 30th.

  6. It certainly is intriguing. Yes, I'd say flooding could be the reason for the raised sidewalks. Interesting that it looks like cement in the foreground. By their clothing, I'd assume this is in the 1940s?

Every photo has a story and they're all interesting in their own way.

  7. Actually even the foreground sidewalks are wood. Just planks.

  8. I remember being in Galveston and seeing houses, etc. raised like this. Probably because of hurricanes and flooding.
Definitely a photo with a story...I liked your version.

  9. I am so impressed with what perfect images your scanner makes. It's a great photo. I was going to say that sometimes historic villages have wooden walkways. There's one near us that does. I was also thinking that a wood sidewalk would be less expensive than brick or cement, but this environment doesn't look like there is a concern about expense. If you find out more, please let us know. Maybe someone will recognize the location.

  10. I am fascinated by this shot. And it's very likely the fellow standing is the same fellow that I scanned the other day in the post about scanning on June 30th. I have photos of this fellow with his two brothers at various ages.

It's possible these two are not brothers and it was a shot of him and a buddy when they were on leave somewhere. So who knows, it could be somewhere in the South.

  11. What I really love about your posts is the way that the picture becomes an adventure to be embarked upon within which we share in the process of discovery.

  12. Alan, that's how I feel when I'm searching for these. It's always an adventure. A mini adventure that expands once you get inside the image. Having these negs just allows you to be there closer to the find. the next post will show how truly unadventurous it can be.

  14. It is a great photo of two guys who could hug each other but this is the alternative.

  15. I think his hair is too long for him to be on leave from the military. Maybe home from school or work somewhere.
