FOOTBALL fans in 1954

It's November 1954 and Princeton is playing Yale. We can once again thank Donald G. Schnabel for these snapshots. And again I'm able to find theme photos for Sepia Saturday because of Donald.

Imagine getting dressed up like this to go to a game. People don't even get this dressed up to go to work. Well, not in California. Different times nicely captured in old 35 mm Kodachrome slides.

This first shot is of Betty with a fellow who was in some of Donald's shots from Paris that I posted in January. No idea who he was.

The rest of these folks are all unknown, but oh my they look so stylish.

Oh yeah, the game. Views of the game from the nosebleed section.

Who won? Scroll down to find out.

FOOTBALL in the Military

No information as to where or when this vintage snapshot was taken. I call it the George H. W. Bush shot because that's who he reminds me of.

I'm lovin' the Quonset huts!

FOOTBALL: Polo Grounds in NYC

I'll admit that I enjoy watching football, but only my team; otherwise I could care less. And I'm a fair weather fan in that I have no qualms about leaving the room if they're losing. But my mind changed about the game once I watched Joe Montana play. There was just something very zen about watching him march the team down the field in a matter of minutes.

The location of this photo is unknown. In fact, other than it being a vintage snapshot, I have no idea where, when, or who are involved. I just found it fascinating to see an old game before big money took over. The sidelines are nearly empty. Shoot, the stands are nearly empty. There are no cameras dancing above the field on wires. There are no women dressed up like idiots prancing and jumping for a camera. There are no corporate loos emblazoned across your eyeballs. It's just a game.

Click on the one below to see more detail, including the mud. Oh yes, the mud of football as opposed to the astroturf of today.

UPDATE: Thanks to WJY from The New Found Photography for the information.
It's the Polo Grounds in New York City. You can tell from the apartment buildings in the background. The stadium was the home of both the baseball and football New York Giants, as well as Fordham and Army. The year before it was torn down it was the home of the New York Titans, latter renamed the New York Jets.

The STRANGE CHRISTMAS and FOOTBALL SEASON AGAIN

Well, the Three Buck Big Box of Photos continues to hold surprises. I started looking more closely at images I'd tossed to the side and found this. Okay, now it's just getting weird. I'm beginning to believe that indeed football boy from the other day is indeed the favored boy in the Christmas image. Now I've found this. If these aren't the same kids, well...I don't know what to say other than I believe I've found their doppelgangers.

At least it's nice to see number 2 son smiling instead of leaning against a wall with a gun at his feet and electrical wires strung in front of him. However, he still seems to get the fuzzy end of the lollipop in that his football is much smaller than son number 1.

As to the little girl? She's perpetually confused.

Man, that family liked some seriously crazy rugs! The rugs sort of pull the whole room together, dude.

FOOTBALL SEASON is upon us

This little fellow was in the box of photos I purchased last weekend at the flea market. Not a particularly interesting shot until I put it next to one of my all time favorites that I've posted twice in the past at Christmas.

I love to find photos and pair them up with another. I did this throughout my latest Blurb book, CHILDHOOD. I find it fascinating the similarities between these two shots. They are not the same boy, but they look similar. One ready to play football in the living room on a very busy rug, the other receiving a football for Christmas while sitting on a very busy rug. Each boy with large eyes staring at the photographer in nearly the same position within the frame.

This is just another aspect of collecting I find fun. Details in one photo that remind me of another. It adds another fun dimension to collecting. I guess you could now say "It's a category. I must collect boys on busy rugs with footballs." Of course I could also start a category of "boy at Christmas with gun at his feet" but I doubt I'll have much luck finding more of those. Then again...you have to be open to what you find.
