BREAKING is not hard to do

I've said before that one fear I have is of falling. Falling as a child is fun. Falling as an adult, not so much. And falling when you're able to get senior discounts is just a nightmare to think about. Well, my fear came true early this week. I fell. If anyone asks what happened I just say, "Dumdassery." I made a decision, after a mental discussion with myself in my car, to go back into the house for something before I took off for a few hours of necessary shopping. Bad call. Should have listened to the other voice that said, "Nah, just drive away." I fell in my driveway and broke my ankle. My life is now consumed with pain medication and vegetating. It's an inconvenience and certainly not high on the list of world problems, but it was a stupid fall and I haven't forgiven myself. A fall on a foot that had been damaged in 2013 when I fell and tore ligaments. So I don't even know if the ligaments were torn again. Who cares? In fact, the break is better than a tear because it should at least heal in four to six weeks. A torn ligament can last a lifetime. Believe me, I know. I'm now just an inconvenience for others.

So scanning photos for now is on the back burner. I sit and watch. I'm very good at watching. I will be like these kids for awhile. I'll just plant my butt in front of the tv and wait to be entertained or fall asleep from the boredom.

I do wish I could see what they were watching. Hmmm…Howdy Doody? Popeye? Fury? Sky King? The Lone Ranger? Ohhhhh…Highway Patrol starring Broderick Crawford? Take your pick, but please don't make it a reality show. For that I'd have to break my brain.

  1. Oh no! I hope you heal quickly and that you don't need too much of that pain medicine. Recently, in my area, they have been showing Jim Bowie, Daniel Boone, and Hopalong Cassidy shows on TV. If you are laid up and forced to watch, while the shows are entertaining, boy! did they ever pace them slow "back in the day"!

    Get all better - soonest.

    1. I've found a station showing The Lone Ranger and The Roy Rogers Show. Yes, pacing is glacial and the dialogue and acting is, well…sure ain't like watchin' Deadwood.

  2. Ps. the curtains and the lampshade clash so badly, I don't think I'd be able to see the TV!

  4. I'm so sorry to hear about a fall. It's hard to be laid up, immobile for weeks at a time. I hope the pain meds help and that maybe, just maybe, the doctor will approve some kind of supportive boot that will allow you to get up and around just a little. If the pain medication isn't too strong, maybe a few good books could help pass the time? Take care.

    1. I am wearing a boot that looks like something a Klingon might wear. In fact that's exactly how the nurse described it when he brought it to me. It is much better than a cast, but there's always the temptation to take it off for a few moments. Have to tell myself not to do that. And though on pain meds, I will be tapering back on those the next few days. As to a book, indeed I am reading one I'm loving, Mr Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore. It even has a cover that glows in the dark!

  5. Ouch! Sorry to see leg is a category, and not in a good way. Simple accidents never make a fun story. An accident while ski jumping, ballroom dancing, formula 1 racing - now that would be a great blog post!
I hope you're soon on your toes again.

    1. Yes, dancing or ski jumping would have made such a better story. My father broke his while walking on an icy hill. He's stepped off of the dry pavement to let a car drive by. Splat! he was down and broke his ankle in multiple places. We drove him to the hospital at Lake Tahoe and the doctor said, "Out skiing this early?"

    1. I remember my grandparents tv having a screen about this size. When we'd drive up from DC to Pennsylvania, arriving late in the evening, I was always sure my grandfather would be watching Groucho on "You Bet Your Life."

  7. Our family didn't get a TV early enough to have a screen like this one, but my uncle had one just like it. I had forgotten about "Highway Patrol". Thanks for the flashback! I do hope you heal within that time period. Take care.

    1. Thank you. Each day a little bit better. Just have to remind myself to not push it because the body will end up pushing back.
