The PEOPLE GATHERED to see A BOAT
It's a boat. A nice looking boat. But what boat? Where was this boat? What is the story of this boat? I have not found anything about it online. No other photos looking like it. Hopefully someone has an idea of where we can search next.

And the photo in its reconstructed completeness. A day in the park with the band and a boat.

This is actually a very worn negative and no matter how much I enlarge it I can't bring in the boat details any clearer. It is what it is and we just have to enjoy it and wonder.

I doubt people were excited by the boat. I suspect they were excited about someone on the boat. Perhaps the President.
ReplyDeleteIndeed. Something or someone exciting was on that boat.
DeleteA wonderful photo that has detail like some grand painting. My favorite is the boy lying in the shade of that shrub. I'm reading this on my Kindle in Charleston SC where I saw a park very like this overlooking the harbor. It is definitely a ship belonging to a very important person. It has side wheel paddles and sails that make it capable of ocean voyages. When I get back home I will do more research. Is this negative from Betty's treasure?
ReplyDeleteNeg was found on ebay. It's not in great condition, but I love all that's going on. So much activity. I'll hope you find something.
DeleteIs there a maritime history museum that might be able to help Ms Tattered? It really is a fascinating find, especially the way you presented it in small snippets.
ReplyDeleteI'll try to look for that. So far on my image searches I haven't found anything exactly like it. There appears to be something on the casing around the paddle, but it's just not clear enough.
Deletemy first thought was of the General Slocum, an excursion boat that went down in 1904 with 1,000 lives lost, mostly women and children. But the geography and people don't match up.
ReplyDeleteThe bow looks a bit more pointed, but I can see what you mean.
DeleteThe men on the side-wheeler are largely wearing white sailor outfits. I would assume this is a circa 1880-1900-ish steam/sail ship.
ReplyDeleteIt does appear a bit military which makes me wonder why I can't find it anywhere online. I'd really love to know about this boat. There's a story here.
