LAURA Playing Her Harp in Her Boudoir
Our final glimpse into Laura's life. A boudoir shot. Did she have two harps or did she have to drag this one through the house? Was the house single floor or did she bump this thing up the stairs?
So we leave Laura alone with her thoughts and her harp. Well, she's not really alone, is she? The photographer is there and most likely her mother...and the person shining the bright light.

Now who in the heck were these taken for? Who was it that her mother wanted to impress? Create your own story.

This series of photos just asks so many questions! The pictures do seem to be designed to impress - perhaps they were taken to send to family far away. Jo :-)
ReplyDeleteIndeed, we forget about how much distance was a factor in families staying together. Now people can take a photo and have it sent to another place in the world in moments.
DeleteI bet she was talented. That's hard to document in a photograph, but her mother must have thought it was worth a try.
ReplyDeleteThe Laura pictures appear as though they may have been taken in the 1890s, and Laura's family was certainly well off financially. I'm guessing the photos were sent to a relative of Laura's father [maybe a sibling] or to a close family friend. I suspect the family was of what was called "new money." If the mother was raised in a wealthy family of "old money" [and thereby had an upper class education] she should have had much better handwriting and presentation in general.
ReplyDeleteI'm throughly enjoying all of your comments. Glad you found this place.
DeleteYou are so blessed to have accumulated such a treasure-trove of old photos, and for me exploring your blog is an adventure that has just started. I feel like a kid with a pocketful of money in a candy store.
ReplyDeleteYou've only scratched the surface. There are several more years to view. And many of the site listed under "Other Sites, Other Worlds" also have wonderful images to see.
