Gentlemen...START YOUR HORSES!

For this weeks Sepia Saturday theme I've got a bit of horse racing.

My best friend gave these to me several years ago. They possibly belonged to her grandparents.

I have no idea where the first three shots were taken, but I'm guessing a time period of the 1930s.

This last shot has a photo finishers stamp on the back from Meridian, Mississippi with the date Feb. 27, 1950.

This year I finally saw a horse race in person. I had mixed reactions. It was beautiful when it was happening, the horses running as a pack, but then I think of how so many of them are drugged and end life in horrible circumstances. I know I prefer the memory of the wild mustangs running across the desert in Nevada, running full tilt right across the road in front of the car then disappearing into the scrub up a hillside. That was a stunning and breathtaking sight. A memory I'll cherish forever.

I'm afraid that due to bandwidth usage I will not be able to get around to many sites this weekend, so please forgive me. It's the world of satellite net access.

  1. The first two photos are great and create a mystic atmosphere. The more modern shot is much more commercial.

  3. With the theme of horses, I too thought of the wild horses of the West. I used to look for them on our annual trip to Wyoming and was rarely disappointed. Every time I recall the memory, the song 'Eight Miles High' begins playing in my head. Unforgettable memory!

  4. I love the photos, but mostly I love your description of the wild horses running across the road. I can just picture it. Reminds me of the time I saw a roadrunner run across the road or the time a HUGE tarantula slowly crossed the road in front of my car as I stared in disbelief. These experiences were not as beautiful as a herd of horses, but they were also magical and awe inspiring.

  5. To me the first and second resemble race tracks or training facilities somewhere. Interesting.

  6. I've only ever been to one horse race, and to be honest I was just a little bored by it all. Great photos, though.

  7. Interesting. I've never seen horses race in the flesh, even though I lived near a racecourse. I can imagine being swept up in the excitement.

  9. Wild horses running across the road sounds kind of dangerous both for the horses and the people in the car. It must be an exciting to see them though.
