The PERFORMER

Some people come by it naturally. Others try but give up. And then there are those who keep trying when they seriously need to find something else to do.

Being a performer is not in the grand scheme for must of us. However, the shiny lights often draw us in as children before we become embarrassed by everything. I took ballet and hula dancing as a child. I had dreams of Broadway, but I would have never made it. But that little spark burns ever so slightly inside and I instead do my performances with the clerk at the store. Give me a smile and a laugh and my day is made.

This is my contribution to Sepia Saturday this week...late.

The BIRTHDAY Girls

This lovely little vintage real photo postcard was given to me for my birthday. No date on it, but it was sent to my friend's grandmother.

Team Stool STANDING

I doubt Team Stool Standing will ever become an Olympic event, but you never know. The world keeps getting weirder each day so I'm almost ready for just about anything. Eventually we all have to step outside our comfort zone.

When you're a caregiver for an elderly person you spend a lot of time worrying about them. And when they get sick with a bad cold you worry even more. And then when you see them coughing and sneezing and touching everything in sight you start to worry about yourself. You know there's no hope, you're going to get sick. And so that is how my life has played out lately. Tissues sticking out of my nostrils, mouth breathing, and eyes that wouldn't stop itching. Fortunately it has now mostly passed, but the downtime did give me time to spend wandering around online looking at vintage snapshots that I would never buy.

I've talked about my theory in the past that Kodak cameras set women free to express themselves in ways they'd never before been able to do. Being silly and having fun with no concern about what society thought was acceptable and often shows up in old snapshots. There were good genuine laughs to be had and shared. Today making pouty faces and taking selfies are the norm. Appearing self-absorbed seems to be a goal. So I wonder about the future poor soul fifty years from now wanting to collect "vintage" snapshots and faced with one selfie after another. I leave that worry to the future. Of course, a good portion of those photos will only be saved as digital files so there's a good possibility that many of them won't survive. Imagine a world free of Kardashian photos. Makes me smile.

But there is one thing I did notice the past few weeks which is that if you go in search of vintage photos you'll find the majority of them feature woman as the subject. I don't know why I never noticed this before. Shots of men are most often in uniforms or business suits. Occasionally you find them in casual clothes having a good laugh; of course the sellers immediately label them "gay" in hopes of taping into that market when they're actually just buddies having fun. Was it the actual fear that taking photos of playing around as friends would label them as homosexual so they stayed away from it? Women always interact differently than men so for them being both physically and emotionally close comes through as just girls being girls, no sexual connotation given.

So tell me what you think. Have women historically been the subject of snapshots more than men? I think in the future it will even out since men are just inclined to take selfies as women. And just think of all the genital shots in the future for all those unfortunate collectors. Perhaps they should be called taking a snapcrotch.

And now that I've read this back I think maybe I kept those tissues stuffed in my runny nose a bit too long and starved my brain of some necessary oxygen. But I'm still sticking with my theory. Women had more fun in front of cameras than men thanks to Kodak Brownies.

Double HOCKEY STICKS!

Sepia Saturday suggests golfers this week. Alas, I have no photos of golfers that I can remember. But woman with hockey sticks? I've got hockey sticks!

Both of these shots come from the photo album created by Betty Schnabel's mother, Louise. I have no idea where either of these shots were taken, but don't they look lovely in the first one. The second one they look like they're a bit more serious about playing than posing. And Betty's mother is in the second one behind the word "Candy." No idea what that means. And I'm confused how this is the 1919 hockey team if it was shot in 1916. Any suggestions?

I can remember playing hockey in high school. It was ludicrous. We went out onto a wet field in the winter wearing white Keds. And of course they watered the lawn each morning before we went out, even if had just rained. And then our shoes and socks would sit in our locker each day growing mold. We'd come back the next morning (I had PE first period which was the worst!) and have to put the wet shoes back on. I'd always try to bring a dry pair of socks. We all ended up putting our socks on followed by plastic bags followed by stinky shoes. The whole locker room smelled like a toxic waste dump.

And then there were the shin shields which were useless. The buckles were so loose that as soon as you ran down the field the shield was covering your calf. It wasn't a pretty sight. Lots of black and blue shins during hockey season. I hated it and always hoped I'd be on the best team so I could stand at the back and "guard" the goalie. I was very good at standing behind everyone letting them break into a sweat. I should have been given an award for that.

Don't get me started about swimming during the winter at first period. Only two hair dryers for over 30 girls in the late '60s when everyone had long hair. Complete frizz each day for weeks. There was no hope. I hated PE and by my senior year I'd developed a really bad attitude. It was my only time in high school where I let be known I'd had enough.

The candy store and COCA-COLA

Imagine my surprise when searching through some negatives to find this image. I've had these negs for years and only went back to them last night while searching for a particular shot. The majority of the negs have never been scanned. Many of the images are already available in an old album bought at the same estate sale as the negs, others are waiting to be discovered.

Now, I'm not saying this is a category, but let's face it, there are people who collect Coca-Cola stuff and I think this would nicely fit that category.

Oh for the days of the corner candy store and malt shop.

SCHOOL DAZED PRINCESS with Court

No idea what's going on here. Appears to be a queen with her royal court of farmers and farmettes. The shot was most likely taken in Ukiah, California.
