I'm wondering if this is one of those occasions when the little one story structure on the right was built first when they claimed their land; with the two story structure a later addition.
What I'd really like to know is if the house is still standing in Nebraska.

If this land was homesteaded, their first home was very likely a sod house. Trees on the great plains were few and far between. Most early settlers needed four or five years, usually more, of good harvests before they had enough money to have lumber for a wood house shipped in. A lot of homesteaders were overwhelmed by the task, gave up, and drifted back east.
ReplyDeleteThanks. That really does put it in perspective. I wish I knew more of the history of this family.
