BOY SCOUT TROOPS in Scotland

This weeks Sepia Saturday theme is scouting. Though I was in scouting for a few years as a Brownie and Girl Scout, by the time I was heading into junior high I got out of it. I have one photo, which I have misplaced, of me in my Brownie uniform with my troop, and my best friend, taken either aboard a submarine or a destroyer, I can't remember which. We visited both at different times in Pearl Harbor.

The following real photo post cards come from my paternal grandparents collection. My grandfather was a scout master in Motherwell, Scotland. He is not in either of the troop photos. I have no idea who any of the people are, though I've always laughed that the one short fellow in the back row of the first photo looks like a scared Roger Daltry.

To see more scouting ephemera visit my site Tattered and Lost Ephemera to see some pages from the 1960 American Boy Scout Handbook.

  2. It was the flat caps worn by the men in two of the photos that caught my attention.

  5. I especially like the last two pictures. They reminded me of when my father taught first aid to my scout troop. Also, when I was in high school my troop participated in a disaster drill.

  8. Those last two photos are gems. And yes, a quite shocked (and short) Roger Daltrey -- too funny!

  10. True Sepia Scouts! The ‘action’ pictures are great. I wonder how many takes they had to do!

  11. Great photos, I'm with Bob on the giant flat caps. I hope they all got their first aid badges, or maybe it was an drama badge.

  13. What wonderful photos - I think the first one is my favorite. I've never seen scouts wearing scarfs like the ones pictured in the first photo. Do you have any idea when the pictures were taken?

  14. I'm guessing late teens since they left Scotland around 1921.

    1. My grandfather was a Scout master in probably the teens. He immigrated to North America in the '20s and I don't think he had anything more to do with scouting. Fascinating that you belonged to a Motherwell troop.
