HAIR TODAY, gone tomorrow

If you lived through the 1960s you'll remember that hair played a huge part in everyone's life. Hair wasn't just hair, it was a statement. Okay, hairstyles have probably always been a bit of a personal statement, but now it was a political statement. I guess tattoos and piercings are the fashion and political statement being used today.

Men have always had the potential problem that they'd lose their hair. Often when a man loses hair at the top of his head he chooses to grow it out of the bottom.

This weeks Sepia Saturday theme is facial hair. I give you two examples of facial hair making a statement. And then I give you examples of some seriously whacky hair atop men's heads.

  1. I smiled spontaneously when I saw the last picture. A great show, the bearded men portraying their superior maleness, then! The one with the slick hair and mustache would look much better without it, because he is an attractive looking man. Enjoyable to see the different hair fashions.

I wonder what grandfather Sturm is thinking ...

  3. Oh my! The last two hair styles have to be seen to be believed.

  4. I think most men look better without facial hair.

  5. That parted hair with the little flips on the side must have been fashionable at one point because these aren't the first photos I've seen of them in this thread.

  6. Oh what ridiculous hair do's. Fascinating.
Why can beards grow but not the hair. It doesn't make sense.

  7. Your title is so true for so many men, as sad as they may think that is. What a great collection....thanks.

  8. I can only see two pics total ... they guy with the twinkly eyes and full beard and the younger one with the silly part on top. I enjoyed you post though!

  9. For some reason that last picture is the one I was drawn to; what a stangely illl-matched couple in some ways. Nice set of pictures.

  11. Like your photos, especially the back of the photo of E.J. Adams. The photographer's ad was so pretty!

  12. What is it with the matching twin peaks on head and mustache? Very curious. I don't get the full beards that are popular with young men today. Works for the Amish and the Smith Bros., that's it as far as I'm concerned.

  13. Oh my goodness - that third card shows a man who was trying too hard. Having said that, the youngsters these days look like they're in a wind tunnel! I have had some Bad Hair too ;-) Jo

  14. A fun group! I'd bet many styles were the result of barbers adopting and marketing the latest hair products and "Paris" fashions.

And Sturm is German for storm too.

  15. The last two certainly gave me a chuckle but I am sure they were in vogue back then.

May I suggest that tattoos and body piercings are more of a social statement for some, and a fashion fad for others.
I'm just saying, (said the tattooed and pierced guy...)
    ;)~

  16. Ticcklebear, I agree. And I think with both piercings and tattoos that for some it has become addictive.
