Betty doing NEEDLEPOINT

I have very little information about Betty Schnabel other than what was in her obituary. She passed away almost a year and a half ago. She might cringe at having her life exposed for all to see, but if it was a life worth living, and hers surely seems to have been one of those, then it's a life worth sharing.

This photo, and the next several posts, are all from Ektachrome slides, not Kodachrome. Their color is very bad and I had to struggle to get even this to look somewhat decent. All of them are very pinkish. I have no idea why. I used Ektachrome a lot and have never found any of my slides turning weird colors. Perhaps it was in the processing. I really don't know.

  1. I think she would be flattered that you have preserved and presented her best moments. This modern domestic portrait resembles many classic paintings from earlier eras and has a timeless quality. Presumably the other pillows are her handwork too.

Ektachrome sounds like Ectoplasm, that mysterious substance that leaks out of ghosts. Maybe they have a similar chemistry.

    1. I'd like to hope so, but I remember a neighbor of hers who was at the estate sale saying Betty could be difficult because it was Betty's way or the highway.

  2. Transparencies use three dye layers, each one sensitive to specific parts of the color spectrum. All three fade, but they fade at different rates. Cyan fades faster than yellow, which fades faster than magenta. Old chromes turn pink because the blue and yellow go before the red. Too, most people think that it's exposure to light that causes fading. That's true, but heat and humidity cause more damage.

    1. Thanks, I didn't know this. It is indeed the magenta that is driving me nuts. All of the slides from this estate sale are in special holders for the type of slide projector she had. So some are damaged from those. But it's been interesting to see how the Kodachromes have maintained their color while the Ektachrome in the same box have had this color destruction.
