DAPPER Dan

Looking at this week's Sepia Saturday prompt I'm wondering if this might be where the man in the straw boater was heading.

In this case, this dapper Dan, is my great-grandfather with his second wife. His name really was Dan. This was in the backyard of their row house in Pennsylvania, probably around 1914.

  1. He was dapper. You're lucky to have photos going back to 1914.

    1. I imagine it was taken by my grandmother with the Kodak camera she won for selling newspaper subscriptions. The camera sits on my bookshelf.

  4. A charming portrait. It looks like the work of an amateur photographer using a box camera, and yet the two are buttoned up in a kind of formal pose, not backyard casual dress. I like divided balconies, and the evidence of spring cleaning with the rugs on the fence.

    1. I'm betting it was taken by my grandmother with her Kodak box camera she won for selling newspaper subscriptions. I have the camera on my bookshelf. And all of these buildings that were downtown Harrisburg were long ago torn down. Looking at Google Earth it looks like they were replaced with a more modern version of row houses. Maybe someday I'll get back to PA again and find out.

  5. When I see photos like this, I wonder why they stopped to pose for a picture THEN. And who was behind the camera? Did Dan carry the rugs out? If so, why was he wearing a hat?

    1. If it was taken by my grandmother it was probably her excitement at getting the new camera. Dan worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad as a car inspector. Was this what he wore to work? No idea.

    1. Unfortunately she was my grandmother's stepmother. My grandmother, at age 78, told me she was mean and she never liked her.
