DON'T FENCE ME IN said Cowboy Dick

The challenge this week from Sepia Saturday for me is fences. I don't like fences. I understand the need for fences, especially in tight neighborhoods, but if at all possible I prefer to see no fences, especially fences with barbed wire.

More and more people have been putting up fences where I live. A crazy neighbor fenced in her five acres because she said people, strangers, were coming up from the park onto her property. But she told me she'd put in a gate so I could come visit. Later I discovered that she didn't actually fence the entire five acres. She did fence the property line between our acreage, but the place where the strangers came from…unfenced. Go figure.

Wineries are starting to fence in their vineyards because of the growing problem of grape theft. It's a horrible sight. I hate it, but I understand them wanting to keep their profits. Still, the vineyards are starting to look like prison camps.

This is Cowboy Dick. I'm guessing this little buckaroo didn't cotton much to fences.

I hear ya Dick. I hear ya. This song's for you and anyone else who prefers to go fence-less.

  1. You would love Netherlands then. It took us a while to realise why the farming landscape looked so good. There were canals in place of fences!

  3. Excellent "cowboy suit" photograph. Sounds like your neighbor might have run out of money on her fence project.

  4. Your crazy neighbor fencing off acres so strangers couldn't come on her property reminds me of a friend who lived at one end of a small community air field in Gasquet. When Crescent City was fogged in, small private planes were rerouted to the Gasquet air strip & often, people had no idea where they had landed so they would walk up and knock on my friend's door to ask.

  5. Give credit where credit is due...Don't Fence Me In, music by Cole Porter, based on a poem by Robert Fletcher with additional lyrics by Porter. Don't Fence Me In was Porter's most successful song. He hated it!

  6. Oh gosh, the West has gotten more wild than ever with almond thieves and walnut hijackers. Now Cowboy Dick has to go after Grape Rustlers!

  7. I know what you mean about fences, and it seems there are so many kinds these days! Even folks who plant living fences, which can be very charming!

  10. I hate to say it but I wish my yard was fenced to keep out the strange dogs that roam the neighborhood irregularly. Some are pitbulls.

  11. The photo of Cowboy Dick makes me think of my own childhood, when I had a very similar costume, complete with fringed chaps, revolver in holster and cowboy felt hat. I feel the same way about fences but we have to have them to keep the stock from messing the driveway, eating the flowers, etc. etc.

The song "Don't Fence Me In" is used in a car advert here - I forget which one.

  12. Ahh, you sent me racing to my Robert Frost book of poetry -- and now I remember, it's what we are fencing in or out that makes for the fence -- not that a fence is necessarily a good or wanted thing. Thanks.
