Stoicism and dread.
I suspect these children went to a school like the one I went to; a school that stressed discipline, that started the elementary kids with ruler smacks to the hands and then transitioned to paddling. As I remember, we weren't a happy school.
I am trying to figure out who the boy on the left reminds me of... Perhaps Sam Waterson? It bugs me that the I can't remember!
