I see London, I SEE FRANCE

This image is a repost, but probably not familiar to Sepia Saturday chums.

In keeping with Alan's fascinating theme I give you the headless ladies.

It's most likely just me, but whenever I look at this shot I see the flag of France; navy blue, white, and red. I do wonder what the photographer was thinking. How could they have framed it so nicely and not noticed the heads were missing. Was this an accident or a Francophile at work?

Due to a possible cold front coming into my head (and I wish it would make up its mind, be sick or not be sick!) I think I may need to have my head removed for a few days. Should there be photos of this occurrence I will immediately post them.

  1. It makes me wonder whether the photographer actually was familiar with using a camera.

  2. An absolutely brilliant picture! Could it be that the photographer is a (French?) shoe fetishist?
Although I hope you will recover soon, I look forward to the sort of promised post operation photo :)

  3. I think these well-dressed ladies lost their heads over their new shoes!

The old point and shoots didn't often come with any sort of zoom feature - so there are lots of "waste" space in the photos they produced.

...now to complete this comment, "I see someone's underpants!"

  4. I expected to see underpants, but this photo is just as amusing. You're right - what happened to their heads? How bad could they be considering the careful pose?

  5. That is funny. Maybe they had all just been shopping and gotten new shoes? It is a great story prompt in any case.

  6. I agree with Kathy. I think they had just been shopping and were proudly showing off their purchases.

  7. What a funny photo. It's so perfect for this week's prompt.

  8. Either Kathy and Christine have hit the nail on the head, which was my first thought as well, or the photographer had had a bit too much French wine and snapped without looking at the viewfinder!

  9. I am seeing this in black and white... anyway, it's perfect for the no head theme. Maybe a child took the photo. Unless it was indeed a foot feature. Or maybe they were all on the lamb and didn't want their faces featured.

  11. Oh stay well. Great photo. If all doesn't go well and you have to take to your bed, worry not as you could re-post the photo for next week as well.

  12. I had a laugh at this and what a good link to this week's theme! I think other commentators could be right - it does remind me of the more modern model shots where the emphasis is on showing off the shoes.

  13. Looks posed to me. So perhaps it was deliberate but then I'm no expert on ladies shoes.

  14. Marvelous photo for this week! In reality it would be nice to have their heads. ha!

  15. Just so long they weren't at the mercy of Madame Guillotine! A perfect response to the prompt.

  16. I can hear the ladies saying to the photographer, "Forget our faces, look at our new shoes!"

  17. This is a great photo. I totally would have picked it up if I'd seen it, too. They're all so perfectly in line.

  18. This is such a funny photo! It's clear to me that those three women all had colds...the same cold you feel you might be getting...and have all removed their heads for the duration! What a great shot!

  19. Very funny! A lot of old cameras like the twin reflex and box styles have to be held at waist height, and the image, often upside down, is arranged in a small window viewfinder. I think that's the reason for this shoe snapshot.

  20. Like the title of your post. I agree with some of the other comments and think the girls went on a shopping trip and had a picture taken of their new shoes. Interesting to see a photo taken from a different perspective than the expected traditional poses.

  21. The Composition Is Actually Good .It Looks Deliberate Rather Than Accidental .Lord Knows The Purpose (A Private joke or Secret?) .And,Yes! France..can-can girls, oh la-la!

  22. I think the ladies wanted the photo to show off their shoes, or maybe these were their new shorter shirts folks were starting to wear. I like the shot just as it is.

  23. Now this is a funny photo! What's more amazing is it had been saved all these years and not discarded. Perhaps it was brought out when a good laugh was needed. Or perhaps the ladies were showing off their new shoes?

  24. While I don't understand the purpose of this picture, surely someone had a clue back then as to the why...
But you made me laugh when you said you'd post pics should your head be removed. I'm just wondering how you'd manage that one!?!
    ;D~

    1. I'm assuming I'd have to use an Instamatic.

    2. Yeah, but your eyes would still be in your head... Better mandate someone to take those pics, as you wander around, headless...
      ;)~

    5. Well now we're getting into the whole chicken or the egg problem.

    6. Hence the conundrum...
      Good luck!!

  25. Thanks to all for you fun comments. They made feeling clammy just a little bit better. And if you understand what I just said you are also probably taking antihistamines.

  26. I know exactly who took that photo - my father! (see my blog post this week).

In early-1947 Christian Dior's "New Look" in women's fashions took the world by storm. Women had been wearing short skirts for about ten years [a long time in the fashion world] and many of them were ready for a change -- and what a change Dior's long-skirted fashions were! So I think this photo was taken in 1947 to show off the ladies' new longer coats. The coats appear new and of the heavier looking material that was popular in the late-1940s and early-'50s. Of course, the "New Look" also had new shoe styles to go with the longer skirts and coats, and I'm quite certain the three ladies are all wearing 1947's "New Look" shoes. It may seem somewhat silly now but back in 1947 the "New Look" really was a big deal.
