Happy FATHER'S DAY for next year

Okay, I'm late with a Father's Day post. Truth is I didn't even know I owned this photograph. It's a negative from a big bag of negatives. Tonight I slid a few out of the bag to see what would "develop." This was the first one. A keeper. Man happily strumming his baby.

I have no information about this shot. Since it's a negative, it's possible no actual prints exist. This might be the first time this photograph has been seen by anyone in decades.

I love the old milk bottle behind him. The clothes and the milk bottle place it in time. Otherwise it's just a man holding a baby.

  1. Great photograph. And I agree with you - there is a great pleasure in "re-exposing" photographs to the world. In it's own little way it is like being the second person to climb Everest (well perhaps a little local hill).

  2. Yes. That's a good one. Late '30's or early '40's I would guess. The baby would be more than 70 now.

  3. He seems quite solicitous of the wee mite - adjusting the blanket and just look at his expression!

Must be wonderful to watch the negatives come to life.

  4. The negs are so much fun to scan. Not as great as watching them show up in the tray under the red light. Can't ever compare to that. But still enjoyable. Whenever I get to itchin' to go to antique stores I pull the big bag out instead because I know there are a lot of images I haven't seen.

  5. It is funny to think about that baby being 70 now. As for the scanning, the best part id that you avoid exposure to those nasty developing chemicals.

  6. True, no nasty chemicals. But I hate to say it, I liked the smell. Well I like what the smell reminds me of. Spending a whole day in my darkroom. Hours passing and never knowing the world was spinning outside my door. I'd get completely lost in my darkroom.

  7. Good grief. You brought a memory back that time. I had forgotten those days I spent under the infra red bulb. I loved the smell too. And I kind of miss it.

  8. I wonder if he's feeling awkward holding the baby. It looks like the baby isn't happy to be held. This photo makes me think I don't remember ever seeing a photo of the men in my family holding a baby. I like the sound of your bag of negatives.

  9. I think the baby looks fussy and was probably a bit wiggly, thus the reason his hand is moving. That's what's interesting with photos of people we don't know. A moment caught that probably doesn't say anything about reality.

Oh yes, the bag of negs is great fun! It's like my hidden stash.
