Oh my grandma, WHAT A BIG KNIFE YOU HAVE!

grandma and baby_tatteredandlost

It's a lovely shot. A grandmother gleefully chasing her granddaughter in the backyard on a warm day. Joyful laughter can be heard.

I bought this as a negative at a flea market. A stack of negs that I could only hold up to the sun and take a guess. It was thrilling when I scanned it and found what I had. I was reveling in the joy of the moment, the scene of domestic happiness. And then I saw it. "IT" drew me in. Oh no. It can't be! The whole scene changed. Run baby, run. Grandma's got a knife!

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the story is all in the details.

  1. Speechless. Oh wait, no I'm not, I had an Irish grandfather who chased us around with his walking stick. We could tell if it was safe to be in the house with him by whether he was speaking English or not.

  2. Sort of like if your mother calls you by your full name or pet name. I knew when she said my full name, including middle name, I was in BIG trouble.

  5. I think grandma is holding an apple in the hand we can not see. She has been slicing baby sized pieces of apple and giving them to the delighted baby.

eh. I'm not much for horror stories.

  8. Maybe she's just been digging out dandelions from the lawn. (I hope!)

  9. Jessica, my middle name is pretzel. I've been known to be a little on the odd side. Mainly I just notice the odd. So laugh away.

Okay, Willow. She's a granny digging dandelions. I'll buy it.

Sad isn't it? We'll never know. And if when I scanned it I'd scanned it at the regular size the print would have been I'd have never noticed the knife. It's sort of like my own version of the movie "Blow Up".
